Kimberly Macarthur Graham
My paintings are mythical worlds peopled by seeds and pods. Inspired by the beautiful logic of stages of life and patterns of growth, I create fertile grounds rich in color, texture, and pattern. Ordered and yet organic, each is a stage set to host the eternal dance of universal opposites: fertile and barren, desirable and repellant, life and death.
I am in debt to a variety of global predecessors, including 15th-century Northern European painting, Islamic and Aboriginal art forms, Surrealistm, and Chinese and Japanese scroll-painting. I am influenced by an ever-expanding spectrum of individual artists including Hieronymus Bosch, Max Ernst, Sean Scully, Fred Tomaselli, Emilio Lobato, Lisa Ludwig, and Judy Pfaff. I am a believer in the Japanese notion of sabi, or finding beauty in the old and imperfect, and an admirer of anyone not afraid to make deeply personal art.
